Bitcoin in Nairobi: what to know
Nairobi is East Africa's fintech hub, and many Kenyans buy small amounts of bitcoin funded by mobile money. Prices are quoted in shillings per 1 BTC.
The price on this page is the international bitcoin price in KES, the same across Kenya. National rules and tax are covered in full on the bitcoin price in Kenya page.
New licensing rules
Under the Virtual Asset Service Providers Act, 2025, crypto businesses need a licence from the Central Bank of Kenya or the Capital Markets Authority; the transition deadline for existing firms is reported as 4 November 2026. After that date, check the regulators' lists before using a platform.
Tax
The 3% Digital Asset Tax was replaced in July 2025 by a 10% excise duty on platform fees. See the Kenya guide.
Legal and tax information last reviewed October 2026. Crypto rules change quickly — check with the regulator or tax authority, or a qualified adviser, before acting. This is not tax, legal or investment advice.
