Cheapest Places to Mine Bitcoin
At today's hashprice ($35.46 per PH/s a day, bitcoin at $80,741), an efficient 200 TH/s machine breaks even at 8.3¢ per kWh. Of the 18 places in our list, 12 have miner electricity below that. The lowest reported prices are in Kyrgyzstan (2.9¢), Kazakhstan (3.2¢), United Arab Emirates (4.0¢), all estimates; among published tariffs for miners, Paraguay's (about 4.5¢) and Ethiopia's (5.0¢) are the cheapest, and Quebec has the cheapest large-power rate in North America. Cheap power rarely lasts: Ethiopia raised its miner tariff by 60% in 2025–26 and froze new permits, Paraguay's contracts run out in 2027, and several countries with the cheapest power ban mining outright.

Cheap power is only part of it
Electricity is most of a miner's running cost, but where miners actually go also depends on whether the power is reliable and allowed. Iran, Kuwait, Venezuela, Egypt and Nepal have some of the world's lowest subsidised electricity prices, but mining is banned or mostly illegal there, and crackdowns have seized machines. China banned mining in 2021, yet miners there still use cheap hydro and coal power unofficially.
Cheap-power countries also change the deal: Ethiopia's tariff for miners went from 3.14¢ to 5¢ in 2025–26 and is due to reach 6.5¢ in July 2027; Paraguay raised its miner tariff in 2024 and its contracts expire at the end of 2027; Laos is cutting supply; Norway and Sweden ended tax breaks or plan bans on new sites. Climate (cooling), import duties on machines, taxes on mined coins (Kazakhstan requires miners to sell most of them through local exchanges) and grid connection times matter too.

Cheapest places to mine: FAQ
Where is the cheapest place to mine bitcoin?
Among countries where mining is legal and the price is published, Kyrgyzstan (about 2.9¢ per kWh), Kazakhstan (about 3.2¢ per kWh), United Arab Emirates (about 4.0¢ per kWh). Large miners also find cheap power by contract in Texas, Oman, the UAE and Bhutan, often below these published prices.
What electricity price makes bitcoin mining profitable?
Today below about 8.3¢ per kWh for an efficient 17.5 J/TH machine, before hardware and hosting. The break-even moves with the bitcoin price, network hashrate and fees, and halves at the next halving (around April 2028) unless the price rises.
How much electricity does it take to mine one bitcoin?
About 976 MWh with a 17.5 J/TH machine at today's network hashrate (1,030 EH/s). At 5¢ per kWh that is about $48,793 of electricity per bitcoin; at the US industrial average, about $84,119.
Is it cheaper to mine bitcoin than to buy it?
Only with cheap power and efficient machines. At 8.3¢ per kWh the electricity cost equals the bitcoin earned; below that, mining earns more than it costs to run, but the machine itself (often $3,000–6,000) has to be paid off, and the hashprice falls as the network grows.
Which US state is cheapest for mining?
New Mexico, at 5.85¢ per kWh on average for industrial users in 2025 (EIA). See all 50 states on the mining profit by state page.
