Bitcoin Mining Profit by State and Province

At today's hashprice ($32.76 per PH/s a day, bitcoin at $77,597), a typical 200 TH/s machine using 3,500 W breaks even at 7.64¢ per kWh. At the average industrial electricity price, it would make money in 18 of 64 US states and Canadian provinces; Quebec is the cheapest place to run it ($2.91 a day). At household prices it loses money almost everywhere.

Canada has no single price list for miners: these are Hydro-Québec's yearly comparison of big-city utility rates (large power, 5,000 kW). State mining laws

Several states have passed laws aimed at bitcoin mining: Texas, New York, Arkansas, Montana, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Kentucky, Arizona. "Right to mine" laws (Montana, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arizona for home mining) protect miners from discriminatory rates and zoning; Arkansas reversed much of its law in 2024; Texas requires large miners to register and accept remote curtailment. Each state's page has the details and sources.

Mining Profit: FAQ

Which US state is best for bitcoin mining?

On electricity alone, the states with the lowest industrial prices: New Mexico (5.85¢/kWh), Oklahoma (6.14¢/kWh), Louisiana (6.18¢/kWh), Texas (6.35¢/kWh), Tennessee (6.59¢/kWh) (EIA, 2025 averages). Large miners negotiate their own contracts, often below these averages, and also look at climate, grid rules and local permits.

Is bitcoin mining profitable at home?

Rarely. US households paid 17.23¢ per kWh on average in 2025, far above today's break-even of 7.64¢ for an efficient 17.5 J/TH machine. Home mining makes sense mainly with very cheap or surplus power (solar, hydro) or to use the heat.

What electricity price do I need to mine bitcoin profitably?

Below 7.64¢ per kWh for a 17.5 J/TH machine at today's hashprice, before hardware cost, cooling and hosting. A more efficient machine (say 13 J/TH) can pay up to about 10.29¢. The break-even falls when the network hashrate rises or the price falls, and halves at the next halving (around April 2028).

Where is mining cheapest in Canada?

By the large-power rates in Hydro-Québec's 2025 comparison: Quebec (5.83¢ CAD), Manitoba (6.00¢ CAD), Alberta (8.02¢ CAD). Canada has no single price list for miners: these are Hydro-Québec's yearly comparison of big-city utility rates (large power, 5,000 kW). Several provincial utilities have limited or paused new connections for crypto mining in recent years (for example in Quebec, British Columbia and Manitoba), so check with the utility before planning a mine.
