Fees today: FAQ
How much is a bitcoin transaction fee today?
About 1 sat/vB for the next block, which is $0.11 for a typical one-input, two-output SegWit payment (141 vbytes). If you can wait an hour, about $0.11.
What does sat/vB mean?
Satoshis per virtual byte. A satoshi is 0.00000001 BTC, and a transaction's size in virtual bytes depends on its inputs and outputs, not on the amount sent. Fee = fee rate × size.
Why are bitcoin fees sometimes high?
Each block has limited space, so when many people want to send at once (rallies, crashes, popular token or inscription launches) they bid up the fee rate. When the queue (mempool) empties, fees fall back to 1–2 sat/vB.
How can I pay lower fees?
Wait for a quiet time (weekends are often cheaper), choose a lower fee rate if you are not in a hurry, use SegWit or Taproot addresses, combine small payments, or use the Lightning Network for small amounts.
