Bitcoin's fall from its all-time high

Each day: close ÷ the highest close so far − 1. All-time highs from our data since September 2014 (the 2013 peak of about $1,150 is before it, so early 2015–2017 readings understate the fall from the 2013 record). Reading drawdowns

A drawdown is how far an asset is below its previous high. Bitcoin's are among the deepest of any major asset: bear markets have taken it 75–85% below its peak, and 20–30% falls happen within most bull markets.

Recovering from an 80% fall needs a 400% gain, which is why bitcoin has taken years to regain its records. Compare with stocks, gold and others on the market history page, or see the monthly returns.

Drawdown: FAQ

How far is bitcoin from its all-time high?

35.4% below the record close of $124,753 on October 6, 2025, at $80,569.

What was bitcoin's biggest crash?

In our data since 2014: 83% from $19,497 (Dec 16, 2017) to $3,237 (Dec 15, 2018). Earlier, in 2011, it fell about 93%.

How long does bitcoin take to recover from a crash?

It varies: falls of 20–40% inside bull markets have recovered in weeks or months, while full bear markets took about three years (December 2017 to late 2020, November 2021 to March 2024).

How is drawdown calculated?

For every day: the close divided by the highest close up to that day, minus one. A reading of −30% means the price is 30% below its record.

These are ways of describing the price history, not forecasts. Past patterns can break, and nothing here is investment advice.
