Halving countdown: FAQ

When is the next bitcoin halving?

At block 1,050,000, expected around March 18, 2028. The exact date depends on how fast blocks arrive; at ten minutes a block it would be April 2028.

What happens at the halving?

The number of new bitcoins paid to miners for each block falls by half, from 3.125 to 1.5625 BTC. New supply drops from about 472 to 236 bitcoins a day. Transaction fees are not affected.

What happened to the price after past halvings?

Bitcoin rose strongly in the 12–18 months after the 2012, 2016 and 2020 halvings. After April 2024 it rose too, but less. Many other things moved the price at the same time, so the halving alone does not explain it.

How many halvings are left?

About 29. The reward keeps halving until it rounds down to zero satoshis, around 2140; after that miners earn only fees.

How often does the halving happen?

Every 210,000 blocks. With blocks about ten minutes apart that is roughly every four years: November 2012, July 2016, May 2020 and April 2024 so far.
