Bitcoin Profit: FAQ
How do I calculate my bitcoin profit?
Divide what you paid (after the buying fee) by the buy price to get the bitcoin you own, multiply by the sell price, take off the selling fee, and subtract what you paid in total. Example: $1,000 at $50,000 with a 0.5% fee buys 0.0199 BTC; sold at $60,000 with a 0.5% fee that returns about $1,188, a profit of $188 before tax.
Do I pay tax on bitcoin profit?
In most countries, yes, when you sell, swap or spend it: the US taxes gains held over a year at 0%, 15% or 20% (shorter holdings at income rates); the UK at 18% or 24% above a £3,000 allowance; Canada taxes half the gain at your income rate; Australia halves the gain if you held it for 12 months; India takes a flat 30% plus cess with no loss set-off. Details: /bitcoin-tax.
What is the break-even price?
The sell price at which you get back exactly what you paid, after the buying and selling fees. It is a little above your buy price; the calculator shows it.
Are the tax figures exact?
No. They are an estimate for one sale on its own, at the rate you choose. Your real tax depends on your other income and gains, your losses, how your coins are matched (FIFO, pooling) and local rules. Use them as a guide, not as tax advice.
