Where the 21 million limit comes from

Bitcoin's software pays miners a fixed reward for each block, which started at 50 BTC in 2009 and halves every 210,000 blocks. Added up, the rewards approach 21 million but never reach it: rounded down to whole satoshis, the total is just under 20,999,999.98 BTC.

Not every mined coin can be spent: studies estimate several million bitcoins are lost for good (forgotten keys, early coins never moved). So the coins actually available are fewer than the supply shown here.

Supply & bitcoins left: FAQ

How many bitcoins are there?

20,103,472 at block 973,110 — 95.73% of the 21 million maximum.

How many bitcoins are left to mine?

896,528, released over the next 114 or so years, more slowly after each halving.

When will the last bitcoin be mined?

Around 2140, when the block reward rounds down to zero satoshis. Almost all of the supply will exist long before: 99% by about 2034.

How many bitcoins are mined per day?

About 472 (3.125 BTC × about 144 blocks). After the next halving, about 236.

Can more than 21 million bitcoins be created?

Only if the rules were changed by a soft or hard fork that the network's users and miners adopted. The limit is enforced by every full node, and there is broad agreement not to change it.
