Bitcoin Charts FAQ

Has bitcoin beaten the S&P 500?

Over most multi-year periods since 2014 bitcoin has risen far more than the S&P 500, but with much larger swings: it has fallen by more than 70% from its peak several times. Since Sep 2014, bitcoin has changed +17,987% and the S&P 500 price index +288%. The S&P 500 figures exclude dividends. Use the range buttons on the comparison chart, and the log scale, to compare any period since 2014.

Why is the comparison chart on a log scale?

Bitcoin has risen many thousand per cent since 2014, so on a normal scale everything before the last few years looks flat. On a log scale the same percentage move takes the same height wherever it happens, which makes early and recent moves comparable. Untick "Log scale" to see the ordinary chart.

What is the bitcoin/gold ratio?

It is the number of troy ounces of gold one bitcoin buys: the bitcoin price divided by the gold price. It shows how bitcoin has done against gold, independent of the dollar. Today one bitcoin buys about 20.1 ounces.

Does bitcoin move with stocks?

Since about 2020 bitcoin has often moved in the same direction as technology stocks (the Nasdaq), especially around interest-rate news, but the link changes over time. The comparison chart lets you check any period.
