If a source fails, the site moves to the next one or keeps showing the last good value and says so ("Delayed") rather than showing a wrong or blank number. A new price that jumps implausibly is only accepted when a second, independent source confirms it.
How the numbers are calculated
Price and 24-hour change
The headline price is the midpoint of the best bid and ask for one bitcoin in US dollars on the primary exchange. Bitcoin trades continuously, every day of the year, so there is no daily close: the change shown is against the price 24 hours earlier, and the range is the 24-hour high and low. Prices on individual exchanges differ slightly; aggregators may show a figure a few dollars away from ours.
Satoshis, units and conversions
One bitcoin is 100,000,000 satoshis (sats). 1 mBTC = 0.001 BTC = 100,000 sats; 1 bit (µBTC) = 100 sats. "How much bitcoin does X buy" divides the amount by the live price, before exchange fees and spreads.
Supply, halving and market value
Supply is calculated from the current block height using bitcoin's fixed issuance schedule: 50 BTC per block at launch, halving every 210,000 blocks. This is the number of coins issued, not the number in circulation, because some coins are lost or unspendable. Market value = price × issued supply. The next halving date is estimated from the remaining blocks and the recent average block time.
Country prices
Local prices are the international bitcoin price × the current exchange rate. Local exchanges can trade at a premium or discount — for example where capital controls or banking restrictions apply — so prices on a local exchange may differ. Each country page explains the legal status, regulator and tax rules as last reviewed on the date shown; rules change, so check with the regulator or tax authority before acting.
Charts, performance and history
Long-term charts, performance figures, seasonality, correlations and the history pages use daily closes of BTC-USD from Yahoo Finance, which start in September 2014. Prices in other currencies multiply each day's close by that day's exchange rate. The 24-hour chart uses prices recorded by this site.
"Bitcoin vs markets"
Bitcoin's 24-hour change is shown next to the latest daily moves of the Nasdaq, S&P 500, Ethereum, gold and the US dollar index. Correlations use daily returns over 30 days and one year. Both are indicative, not explanations of cause.

Editorial standards
Figures are calculated automatically from the sources above; explanatory text and country guides are written and fact-checked against official regulator, tax-authority, central-bank and major news sources, which are listed on each page. We do not accept payment from exchanges and do not rank or recommend them. If you spot an error, tell us via corgano.com and we will correct it.
Prices are indicative, may be delayed, and are not an offer to buy or sell. Bitcoin is highly volatile and you can lose money. Nothing on this site is financial, investment, tax or legal advice.
