The 2026 bar is the year so far. Halvings cut the reward per block in half (November 2012, July 2016, May 2020, April 2024), which is why yearly output falls in steps.

Value then: coins mined × that year's average daily close; value today: × $80,741 (our calculations). No price before 2011 (bitcoin had no regular market price at first); the 2011–2014 prices are Bitstamp daily closes. Mining fees are not included: they move existing coins and create none. Year boundaries are approximate (within a few blocks) until the exact heights are loaded.

Why most bitcoins already exist

Each block pays its miner a fixed reward that halves every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years. The first period (2009–2012) paid 50 BTC a block and created 10.5 million coins, half of all there will ever be. Each period since has added half as many as the one before: 5.25 million, 2.625 million, 1.3125 million, and now 656,250 in the period that runs to 2028.

Since the start of 2020, 1,974,506 bitcoins have been mined, 9.8% of all that exist. By November 2025 the supply passed 95% of the cap.

Mined is not the same as available

Every mined coin is counted in the supply, but not every coin can be spent. Analytics firm Chainalysis estimated in 2020 that about 3.7 million bitcoins (about 20% of the supply then) had probably been lost for good: keys forgotten or destroyed, early coins never moved (report). Researcher Sergio Lerner's analysis of early blocks (the "Patoshi pattern") suggests bitcoin's creator mined about 1.1 million of the first coins and has never moved them (overview). Both are estimates; nobody can prove a coin is lost.

Who holds the rest: companies, ETFs and governments.

Bitcoins mined: FAQ

How many bitcoins have been mined?

20,108,144 as of block 974,605, which is 95.75% of the 21 million maximum. The number grows by 3.125 BTC with every block, about 440 a day.

How many bitcoins were mined in 2025?

About 164,663 BTC, from 52,692 blocks at 3.125 BTC each. At that year's average price they were worth about $16.7 billion.

When was half of all bitcoin mined?

The 10.5 millionth bitcoin was mined at block 209,999, in November 2012, just before the first halving. The first four years produced as many coins as all the years after them will.

How many bitcoins are mined per day?

About 440 (3.125 BTC per block × about 144 blocks a day). It drops to about 220 after the next halving, expected around April 2028.

Are lost bitcoins counted in the supply?

Yes. The supply counts every coin the rules have created. Estimates of lost coins, such as Chainalysis's 3.7 million in 2020, are guesses based on coins that have not moved for many years.

Supply at a block height follows bitcoin's issuance rule (50 BTC a block, halving every 210,000 blocks, rounded down to whole satoshis). Block heights: mempool.space (year boundaries approximate until the next data refresh). Prices: Corgano's daily closes (Bitstamp before September 2014). Values, shares and future dates are our calculations; future dates assume ten-minute blocks.
