Change in bitcoin's daily close (00:00 UTC) from the close before the release ("2 days" = to the following day's close). Bitcoin trades 24/7, so the UTC day is the trading day. The 2:00 pm ET Fed statement comes only 4–5 hours before the UTC close, so for Fed decisions the 2-day figure is the headline. One day's move also reflects everything else that happened, and bitcoin often moves on its own news.

Does Bitcoin Move More on These Days?

Average size of bitcoin's move (up or down) on release days since 2023, against ordinary weekdays (weekends are left out of the comparison because no data is released then and trading is thinner). Fed decisions are measured over two UTC days — the decision day and the next — and compared with ordinary two-day moves.

FOMC interest-rate decision

Interest rates set the cost of money and the appetite for risk. Bitcoin has tended to trade like a risk asset around Fed decisions: hawkish surprises have often weighed on it and dovish ones supported it, though the link is loose. The statement is at 2:00 pm ET and the Chair's press conference follows at 2:30 pm.

Biggest bitcoin move around a Fed decision since 2023: −8.1% on Dec 18, 2024.

US Consumer Price Index (CPI)

Inflation drives expectations for Fed policy. A hotter-than-expected CPI can push yields and the dollar up and weigh on bitcoin in the short run, even though some holders see bitcoin as a long-term hedge against currency debasement.

US Employment Situation (nonfarm payrolls)

Payrolls and the unemployment rate shape how far and how fast the Fed moves, and so the mood in risk assets including bitcoin. It is usually released on the first Friday of the month.

US Personal Income & Outlays (PCE price index)

The PCE price index is the Fed's preferred inflation measure. It usually moves markets less than CPI because much of it can be estimated from CPI and PPI, but surprises still matter.

How does bitcoin react to Fed decisions?

Since 2023, bitcoin has moved 2.35% on average (up or down) from the 00:00 UTC close before a Fed decision to the close the day after, compared with 2.58% over ordinary two-day periods on weekdays, and was higher after 16 of 30 decisions. The reaction depends on the surprise versus expectations and on the Chair's guidance, not on the decision alone.

Why does this calendar matter for bitcoin?

Bitcoin has no earnings or interest, so much of its short-term movement comes from risk appetite and liquidity, which are driven by interest-rate expectations and the US dollar. Fed decisions and the inflation and jobs data that feed into them are the scheduled events most likely to shift those, and bitcoin can move sharply when a release surprises the market. Bitcoin also moves a lot on its own news (ETF flows, regulation, exchange events), so on many release days the data is not the main driver — see the figures on this page.

How are bitcoin's moves measured if it trades 24/7?

Bitcoin never closes, so this page uses the price at 00:00 UTC, the end of each UTC day, as the daily close (the standard BTC-USD daily close on Yahoo Finance). Data releases at 8:30 am ET (12:30 or 13:30 UTC) fall inside the UTC day, so "that day" runs from the 00:00 UTC close before the release to the next 00:00 UTC close. Fed statements come at 2:00 pm ET, only 4–5 hours before that close, so for Fed decisions the headline figure runs to the close of the following day. Today's UTC day is left out until it has closed.

Where do these dates come from?

From the official schedules of the Federal Reserve, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Dates can change (for example during a government shutdown); we update the calendar when they do.
