Bitcoin in Bangladesh: rules, tax and how it's priced
Bitcoin's price in taka is often quoted in lakh or crore (for example ৳1 lakh = ৳1,00,000). Dealing in crypto is not permitted in Bangladesh, so the figures on this page are for information only. They show the international BTC/USD price converted to BDT at today's exchange rate. They are not a price at which bitcoin can lawfully be bought in Bangladesh.
Is bitcoin legal in Bangladesh?
No. Bangladesh Bank, the central bank, has warned against crypto since 2017, when it said virtual currencies are not authorised under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, 1947, and that dealing in them could breach money-laundering and anti-terrorism laws. In a circular of September 2022 it asked all individuals and institutions to refrain from dealing in virtual assets and currencies. It said transactions made in, from or to Bangladesh to obtain virtual assets are not permitted. Under section 23(1) of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, such transactions are a punishable offence, with up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both. No Bangladeshi regulator licenses crypto exchanges.
Penalties, enforcement and tax
Because crypto dealing is not permitted, Bangladesh has no tax regime for crypto gains. Bangladesh Bank has told banks to tighten their monitoring of crypto-related transactions. It has also warned exporters that keeping export earnings abroad in any form, including crypto, breaks the law. Buying crypto with foreign currency is prohibited. Dealing with unnamed or pseudonymous parties online can also raise issues under the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012. Some commentators have called for crypto to be regulated rather than banned, but as of October 2026 Bangladesh Bank had not changed its position.
Banks, mobile money and payments
Banks, non-bank financial institutions and mobile financial services such as bKash and Nagad are barred from exchanging, transferring or trading virtual assets, and from facilitating businesses that do. This means there is no legal route to buy bitcoin with taka through the Bangladeshi financial system. The taka figures on this page simply translate the international price into local currency so that readers can follow it. They are not an offer or an invitation to trade, and anyone in Bangladesh should not treat them as one.
