Bitcoin in Indonesia: rules, tax and how it's priced
Indonesian exchanges quote bitcoin as the price of 1 BTC in rupiah (Rp). The rupiah figure is very large, so most people buy a small fraction of a coin in round rupiah amounts. The figures on this page are the international BTC/USD price converted at today's USD/IDR exchange rate. They are before exchange fees, spreads and any local premium, so a local exchange may show a slightly different price.
Is bitcoin legal in Indonesia?
You can legally buy, hold and trade bitcoin in Indonesia as an investment, but you cannot use it to pay. Bank Indonesia says crypto is not a lawful means of payment under the Constitution, the Bank Indonesia Law and the Currency Law. The rupiah is the only legal tender. On 10 January 2025, under Government Regulation 49/2024, supervision of crypto moved from the commodity-futures regulator Bappebti to the Financial Services Authority (OJK). Crypto was reclassified from a commodity to a digital financial asset, and OJK Regulation 27/2024 now governs exchanges, traders and custodians.
How is crypto taxed in Indonesia?
Since 1 August 2025, Ministry of Finance Regulation (PMK) 50/2025 has set the crypto tax rules. When you sell crypto through a domestic platform, a final income tax of 0.21% of the transaction value applies. If you sell through a foreign platform, the rate is 1%. Because it is a final tax on the value of each sale, it applies whether you make a profit or a loss. Buying crypto no longer carries VAT: PMK 50/2025 treats crypto as a financial asset, similar to securities, and exempts crypto transfers from VAT. VAT still applies to the fees platforms charge. Under PMK 108/2025, crypto service providers have had to carry out due-diligence checks on new users since 1 January 2026. These checks support international tax information exchange under the OECD's Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF).
Buying bitcoin in rupiah
To buy legally you need an OJK-licensed digital financial asset trader (Pedagang Aset Keuangan Digital, PAKD). By late September 2026, 28 companies held a PAKD licence. You usually fund your account by rupiah bank transfer or e-wallet, after identity checks. Using a licensed domestic platform also means the lower 0.21% tax rate applies instead of the 1% rate for foreign platforms. The OJK publishes its list of licensed traders, so check it before you sign up. A local exchange's rupiah price can differ from this page's converted price because of its spread and fees.
One of Asia's largest retail crypto markets
Crypto is a mass-market investment in Indonesia. According to the OJK, there were 23.21 million crypto consumer accounts by August 2026, and domestic crypto transactions that month were worth Rp 23.16 trillion. The OJK publishes these figures every month. Many first-time investors start with small rupiah amounts on mobile apps. That is why the table on this page shows how much bitcoin round sums such as Rp 100,000 or Rp 1,000,000 buy at today's price.
