How Many Bitcoins Are Left to Mine?
891,856 bitcoins are left to be mined: 4.25% of the 21 million limit. 235,606 of them arrive before the next halving (block 1,050,000, expected around April 2028), and 432,511 will still be unmined at the end of 2030. Because the reward keeps halving, 99.95% of all bitcoin will exist by 2052, but the last fractions trickle out for another century, to around 2140.

What's Left, Period by Period
Each period lasts 210,000 blocks (about four years) and pays half the reward of the one before.

Rewards are whole satoshis (0.00000001 BTC), so they are rounded down; the 33rd halving takes the reward to zero, and the total ends just under 20,999,999.9769 BTC. Future start years assume ten-minute blocks.

What happens when the bitcoins run out?
Miners are paid in two ways: the block reward (new coins) and the fees people attach to their transactions. As the reward shrinks, fees have to carry more of the cost of securing the network. Over the last 144 blocks fees were 0.5% of miners' income. Whether fees alone will pay enough to keep mining secure decades from now is one of bitcoin's open questions; for the next few halvings the reward still dominates.
The supply cap is a rule in the software that every full node enforces. Changing it would need the network's users to adopt new rules, and there is broad agreement not to.

Bitcoins left: FAQ
How many bitcoins are left to mine?
891,856 as of block 974,605, 4.25% of the 21 million limit.
When will the last bitcoin be mined?
Around 2140, at block 6,929,999, assuming ten-minute blocks after the next halving. By then the reward is a fraction of a satoshi, so it rounds to zero. In practice 99.95% of all coins will exist by 2052.
How many bitcoins will be mined before the next halving?
235,606, at 3.125 BTC per block, until block 1,050,000 (expected around April 2028). After that the reward is 1.5625 BTC.
Will there ever be exactly 21 million bitcoins?
No, slightly fewer: because rewards are rounded down to whole satoshis, the total ends at about 20,999,999.98 BTC. Some coins were also never claimed or are provably unspendable, such as the 50 BTC in the very first block.
Does mining get harder as fewer bitcoins are left?
Mining difficulty depends on how much computing power competes for blocks, not on how many coins are left. What changes is the reward: each halving cuts miners' income from new coins in half, so fees and the price matter more to them.
Supply at a block height follows bitcoin's issuance rule (50 BTC a block, halving every 210,000 blocks, rounded down to whole satoshis). Block heights: mempool.space (year boundaries approximate until the next data refresh). Prices: Corgano's daily closes (Bitstamp before September 2014). Values, shares and future dates are our calculations; future dates assume ten-minute blocks.
