Bitcoin mining laws in Texas
Texas wants large miners on its grid to be visible and flexible. Since SB 1929 (2023), mining sites on the ERCOT grid drawing more than 75 MW must register with the Public Utility Commission each year (penalties up to $25,000 a day). SB 6 (signed June 2025) adds rules for all new large loads of 75 MW or more: a study fee of at least $100,000, disclosure of backup generation, and equipment that lets ERCOT cut their power remotely for loads connected after 31 December 2025. Miners are paid to switch off at peak times through demand-response programmes.
